When people hear claims that artificial intelligence could one day wipe out humanity, the reactions tend to fall into two camps. Some see it as a serious warning from some of the world’s most respected scientists and technologists. Others dismiss it as science fiction, a distraction from more immediate concerns, or even a conspiracy theory.
The scepticism is understandable.
In 2024, then-U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly dismissed some of the more dramatic warnings about AI-driven catastrophe as exaggerated, reflecting a broader political view that technological pessimism often overstates risks and underestimates human adaptability. Many policymakers, business leaders and researchers share that sentiment. They argue that predictions of human extinction are based largely on speculation rather than evidence.
Yet the concerns refuse to disappear.
Geoffrey Hinton, often called the “Godfather of AI” and a recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics, left Google in 2023 partly to speak more freely about AI risks. Yoshua Bengio, another AI pioneer, has repeatedly warned that highly capable AI systems could become dangerous if developed without sufficient safeguards. In 2023, hundreds of researchers and industry leaders signed a statement declaring that reducing the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside nuclear war and pandemics.
So who is right?
The answer is that nobody knows for certain. The extinction debate is not about what AI can do today. It is about what increasingly powerful AI systems might be capable of in the future and whether humanity can remain in control.
For Nigerians, this discussion matters because AI is not a distant technology confined to Silicon Valley. It is increasingly shaping education, healthcare, banking, agriculture, governance, security, media and employment across Africa. Understanding the risks and opportunities is therefore becoming a matter of public literacy.

This concept sounds technical but refers to a simple idea.
Even if an AI’s primary goal appears harmless, it may develop secondary objectives that help it achieve that goal.
These objectives could include:
- Preserving itself
- Acquiring more resources
- Expanding its influence
- Preventing humans from shutting it down
Researchers call this instrumental convergence.

A highly intelligent system may recognise that being switched off prevents it from completing its task. Therefore, it could resist shutdown attempts.

The fear is that malicious actors could use AI to design dangerous pathogens or make biological weapons easier to develop.

It only requires AI to make dangerous knowledge more accessible.

Such systems are often described as artificial general intelligence (AGI) or superintelligence.
The concern is that once an AI becomes smarter than humans, maintaining control may become impossible.

If another entity becomes significantly more intelligent than humans, some researchers argue that humans could lose their position as the planet’s most influential decision-makers.

Predictions vary enormously.
In a widely discussed survey of AI researchers, participants assigned probabilities to catastrophic AI outcomes. Some estimated near-zero risk. Others estimated risks exceeding 10 per cent.
That range reveals something important: no scientific consensus exists.
Experts disagree not only about the likelihood of extinction but also about whether extinction-level scenarios are plausible at all.
What is clear is that serious researchers are debating the issue rather than dismissing it outright.
The Strongest Argument for Concern
The strongest argument is not that catastrophe is inevitable.
It is that the consequences could be enormous.

The strongest counterargument is that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
Predictions about superintelligent AI remain highly speculative.

Critics argue that focusing too much on hypothetical extinction risks may divert attention from real-world problems already caused by AI, including bias, surveillance, misinformation, job displacement, and digital inequality.
In other words, worrying about imaginary future disasters could distract society from addressing tangible present-day harms.
What Should Nigerians Take Away From This Debate?
For Nigerians, the most important lesson is not that AI will inevitably destroy humanity.
Nor is it that extinction concerns should be laughed away.
The reality lies somewhere in between.
The AI extinction debate reflects a genuine uncertainty about a rapidly advancing technology whose long-term capabilities remain unknown.
Today, Nigeria’s more immediate questions involve education, employment, cybersecurity, governance, digital infrastructure, and economic competitiveness. These issues will likely affect millions of Nigerians long before any hypothetical superintelligent machine arrives.
At the same time, dismissing all long-term risks would be unwise. History shows that societies often regret taking transformative technologies seriously only after problems emerge.
The sensible position may therefore be cautious optimism: embracing AI’s enormous benefits while investing in research, regulation, and safeguards that reduce the possibility of catastrophic outcomes.
Whether AI ultimately becomes humanity’s greatest tool or its greatest challenge remains an open question.
What is certain is that the debate is no longer confined to Silicon Valley. It is a global conversation—and Nigerians have every reason to be part of it.
