Barclays, one of the United Kingdom’s largest banking groups, plans to cut approximately 5,000 jobs by the end of 2026 as it expands its use of artificial intelligence (AI) and technology to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs.
The planned reductions represent around 5% of the bank’s global workforce, which stood at approximately 93,000 employees at the end of 2025. The bank disclosed the figures alongside its third-quarter financial results on October 22, 2026. Reuters reported that the cuts form part of a broader effort to lower fixed costs and improve returns.
Around 4,000 More Jobs Expected to Go
Barclays has already eliminated approximately 1,000 positions during the first half of 2026, with another 4,000 job cuts expected before the end of December.
According to the Press Association, most of the reductions will affect operational and support functions. About 60% of the planned cuts are expected to come from support roles, including software development positions.
The reductions are part of a wider, multi-year strategy to simplify the bank’s operations, modernise its technology infrastructure and improve productivity.
AI Plays a Growing Role in Banking Efficiency
Barclays is increasing its use of AI and other technologies to streamline work processes and reduce the resources required for certain tasks. These investments could let the bank handle some operations more efficiently while reducing its need for certain roles.
However, the bank’s leadership has emphasised that AI is not the only factor behind the job cuts.
Chief executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan said the efficiency gains largely reflect years of investment in technology, including modernising platforms, harmonising systems and simplifying processes.
He described AI as “the icing on the cake, not the cake”, highlighting the underlying technology infrastructure needed to realise AI’s benefits.
The distinction matters as financial institutions increasingly explore AI tools for software development, customer service, data analysis, and administrative work.

Job Cuts Come Despite Higher Quarterly Profits
The announcement accompanied Barclays’ third-quarter results, which showed pre-tax profit of approximately £2.3 billion for the three months ending September 2026, up 12% from the same period a year earlier.
Despite the increase, the result fell short of analysts’ expectations, partly because fixed-income trading performed more weakly.
Barclays also reported about £201 million in structural cost reductions in the third quarter and said it planned further savings in the final three months of the year.
The bank’s strategy reflects an ongoing effort to control expenses while creating capacity for future investment in technology and other business priorities.
What the Cuts Mean for the Future of Work
Barclays’ plans highlight a wider question facing the financial services industry: how will increasing AI adoption affect employment?
Banks are investing in automation and AI to improve productivity, speed up processes and reduce costs. These technologies can change the nature of existing jobs, reduce demand for some tasks and create demand for different technical and specialist skills.
For employees, the shift could increase the importance of skills in AI, data analysis, cybersecurity, technology management and digital banking. However, the extent to which AI directly replaces workers will vary by role and institution.
Barclays’ announcement does not mean that all 5,000 positions are being eliminated exclusively because of AI. Instead, the cuts form part of a broader efficiency programme supported by technology investment, operational changes and cost control.
As banks continue to modernise their systems, balancing automation, workforce needs, and investment in new skills will likely remain a major issue for the industry.
