About the Role

We are looking for a Freelance AI Researcher to lead and support field-based and data-driven research projects across Nigeria.

This role is ideal for someone who can go beyond desk research actively engaging with AI users, startups, students, developers, academics, and institutions to gather, analyse, and interpret primary data that reflects how AI is being adopted and applied in real-world contexts.

You will work on a project-by-project basis, contributing to reports, insights, and intelligence outputs that position AIbase Nig as a leading source of AI data in Africa.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and execute research projects focused on AI adoption and usage in Nigeria
• Gather primary data through:
  • Surveys
  • Interviews
  • Field engagement
  • Community outreach
• Engage with:
  • AI startups
  • Developers and engineers
  • Students and academic institutions
  • Businesses and AI users across industries
• Collate and organise raw data from multiple sources
• Analyse data to identify trends, patterns, and insights
• Produce structured research outputs, including:
  • Reports
  • Briefings
  • Insight articles
• Collaborate with editorial teams to translate findings into publishable content
• Track evolving AI developments and emerging use cases across sectors

Skills & Requirements

Required Skills (Core Competencies)

• Proven experience in research, data collection, or fieldwork
• Ability to design and conduct primary research (surveys, interviews, data gathering)
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret raw or unstructured data
• Excellent written communication skills for reporting insights clearly
• Strong organisational skills for managing datasets and research outputs
• Ability to work independently and meet project deadlines
• Genuine interest in AI, technology, and innovation in Nigeria

Desirable Skills (Strong Advantage)

• Background in:

• Meet agreed editorial deadlines and publishing schedules
