South Africa and China have agreed to deepen cooperation in digital education, artificial intelligence, and technical skills development as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration in education and innovation.
The agreement was confirmed in an official statement by the South African government, outlining expanded collaboration in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and in emerging technologies, including AI, robotics, and advanced digital systems.
According to the statement, the partnership aims to enhance skills development and improve the capacity of education systems to respond to the demands of a rapidly changing global economy.
A key focus of the agreement is the strengthening of technical and vocational education programmes. The two countries are expected to expand cooperation in training institutions, with an emphasis on aligning skills development with industrial and technological priorities.
The statement noted that both countries will also explore cooperation in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and digital transformation to support long-term economic development.
In its remarks, the South African government said the collaboration reflects efforts to “strengthen cooperation in the field of education and skills development” and to enhance “mutual understanding and exchange programmes between the two countries.”
It further highlighted that the partnership will support broader development goals through improved access to technical education and innovation-focused training.

Officials also indicated that implementation will involve structured engagement mechanisms to ensure coordination between relevant institutions in both countries.
The agreement comes as South Africa continues to prioritise digital transformation and skills development as part of its broader economic strategy, while China expands its educational and technological partnerships across Africa.
Both countries described the cooperation as a long-term effort to build capacity, strengthen education systems, and support innovation-driven growth.
The initiative is expected to contribute to workforce development in emerging technology fields, including artificial intelligence, as global demand for digital skills continues to grow.
