The Enugu State Government has sent a high-level delegation from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) to Qatar for a study visit focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), innovation systems, and experiential learning models to strengthen technology-driven education in Nigeria.
The delegation, led by the ESUT Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aloysius-Michael Okolie, is currently undertaking institutional engagements in Doha to examine how leading education systems integrate AI, robotics, data science, cybersecurity, and other emerging technologies into teaching, research, and innovation processes.
The visit forms part of Governor Peter Mbah’s broader education reform agenda, which seeks to reposition Enugu State’s tertiary institutions toward practical, skills-based, and industry-aligned learning models that reflect global best practices in science and technology education.
According to the state government, the initiative is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, while also enhancing employability and entrepreneurship outcomes among graduates of state-owned institutions.
Speaking to the mission’s objective, Prof. Okolie said the delegation is focused on studying advanced academic models that combine classroom learning with real-world technological applications.

He explained that ESUT is particularly interested in systems that support innovation in robotics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data science, and software engineering, to adapt such models to local educational realities.
The study tour also includes scheduled engagements with selected institutions in Qatar, where discussions are expected to focus on curriculum development, digital transformation in higher education, and research partnerships that promote innovation-driven learning environments.
The delegation is also exploring plans for the establishment of a Centre for Artificial Intelligence Studies, Research and Innovation at ESUT. The proposed centre is expected to function as a multidisciplinary hub for AI research, capacity building, and collaboration between academia and industry.
The high-level team sent by Governor Mbah is led by Prof. Aloysius-Michael Okolie and includes Prof. Chike Anibeze, Director of Academic Planning; Ambrose Ugwu, ESUT Registrar; and Prof. Titus Enudu, Chairman of the MoU Committee.
Others are Prof. Frank Iloeje, Director of Physical Planning; Dr Onyekachi Egwuagu, Director of TETFund; Dr Jonathan Okolie, Office of the Vice-Chancellor; and Samson Eneje, a Qatar-based Enugu technology expert.
Officials say the centre will support students and researchers in developing practical solutions to real-world problems while strengthening the university’s role in Nigeria’s emerging digital economy.
The delegation comprises senior academic and administrative leaders involved in ESUT’s academic planning, infrastructure development, and technology integration efforts.
At the end of the visit, the team is expected to present a detailed report outlining recommendations for integrating AI and other emerging technologies into ESUT’s curriculum, research framework, and institutional development strategy.
The Enugu State Government says the initiative reflects its long-term vision of building a knowledge-driven economy anchored on innovation, digital skills development, and modernised education systems capable of competing globally.
