The Enugu State Government has launched a three-day Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy training programme for permanent secretaries and directors as part of efforts to improve productivity and modernise public service operations in the state.
The training, which began on Tuesday, is being funded by the European Union in partnership with the Enugu State Government through the Office of the Head of Service.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Head of Service, Godwin Anigbo, said the initiative was designed to equip senior civil servants with practical AI knowledge that can improve efficiency, decision-making, and service delivery across ministries and government agencies.
He explained that artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming workplaces globally and that the Enugu civil service must adapt to remain effective in a digital era.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary for General Administration, Ogbonna Idike, the Head of Service noted that AI offers major opportunities for economic growth, innovation, and improved governance.
He also stressed the importance of understanding the ethical responsibilities and challenges associated with the use of AI technologies in public administration.
According to officials, the training will expose participants to practical applications of AI tools in solving workplace challenges, automating routine processes, and enhancing productivity within the state civil service.
The programme aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s digital transformation agenda aimed at moving government operations from analogue systems to fully digital processes.

He emphasised the need for responsible AI adoption that reflects local realities while supporting sustainable development.
