Apple Music is set to roll out Transparency Tags that will indicate when artificial intelligence has been used to create music, album artwork, compositions, or music videos on its platform. The move is part of the company’s effort to provide more transparency in the music industry as AI-generated content becomes more common.
The system will cover AI-generated artwork, audio recordings, lyrics or musical arrangements, and visual content in music videos. Multiple tags can be applied to a single release if AI was involved in different aspects of the project. In a newsletter to industry partners, Apple said, “Proper tagging of content is the first step in giving the music industry the data and tools needed to develop thoughtful policies around AI. Labels and distributors must take an active role in reporting when the content they deliver is created using AI.”
Unlike some other streaming platforms, Apple’s approach relies on voluntary disclosure by labels and distributors rather than automated AI detection. Apple described the initiative as “a concrete first step toward the transparency necessary for the industry to establish best practices and policies that work for everyone.”
The new Transparency Tags will be required for all new content submitted to Apple Music, marking a significant effort to balance innovation with accountability as AI continues to reshape music production.
