A China–Africa artificial intelligence initiative has called on young people across Africa to submit innovation cases demonstrating practical AI applications in real-world settings.
The programme, titled the AI Case Innovation Competition and Study Visit for African Youth, is organised under the Secretariat of the Chinese Follow-up Committee of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). It forms part of ongoing cooperation efforts between China and African countries in science, technology, digital transformation, and youth development.
The competition aims to identify functional, scalable AI solutions developed by African youth and to highlight how artificial intelligence is being used to address social, economic, and development challenges. Organisers emphasised that submissions should focus on real-world implementation or near-deployable systems rather than theoretical research alone.
“The initiative focuses on practical AI solutions that can be applied to real development challenges across Africa.”
Eligible participants include university students, researchers, startup founders, and young professionals engaged in artificial intelligence and related digital fields. Entries are expected to showcase working solutions or applied projects using AI in practical settings.
The competition covers several thematic areas, including public service delivery, scientific and technological innovation, industrial applications, cultural exchange, and talent development. These areas were selected to reflect priority sectors where AI is increasingly being deployed to improve efficiency and support development outcomes.
Submissions are open until May 29, 2026. After the deadline, entries will undergo an evaluation process scheduled from May 30 to June 12, 2026. Selected innovations will be compiled into a collection of case studies highlighting AI applications across African countries.
Winners of the competition will receive certificates and recognition awards. Outstanding participants will also be selected for study visits to China, where they will engage with universities, research institutions, and technology companies as part of structured exchange and learning programmes.
“Outstanding participants will gain exposure to China’s AI ecosystem through study visits and professional exchanges.”
The initiative is positioned within broader China–Africa cooperation on innovation and digital development under the FOCAC framework. Organisers say artificial intelligence is a key emerging area of collaboration, with growing relevance to sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, governance, and industrial development across the continent.
The programme is also intended to strengthen youth participation in global technology ecosystems by providing a platform for African innovators to showcase their work, gain international exposure, and build professional networks in AI.
Analysts note that such initiatives reflect increasing emphasis on technology-driven partnerships between China and Africa, particularly as both regions seek to expand digital infrastructure and innovation capacity.
Overall, the competition highlights growing efforts to position African youth at the centre of AI development and cross-border technological exchange.
