The global push to develop talent in artificial intelligence and digital skills is accelerating, with Africa increasingly seen as a key growth hub. In the latest development, Lagos-based game development studio Maliyo Games has partnered with Arizona State University (ASU) to train and certify 10,000 African learners in AI, game development, and related digital skills.
The programme, announced through ASU’s Endless Games and Learning Lab in collaboration with Maliyo’s GameUp Africa initiative, focuses on practical, industry-oriented training, including micro-credentials and project-based learning.
ASU officials say the initiative is designed to bridge the gap between education and industry demand.
“This marks a new phase in game development, and we are genuinely excited to be building it with Maliyo Games and the GameUp Africa community,” said Mark Olilla, founding director of ASU’s Endless Games and Learning Lab.
“The talent we encountered here, the drive and creativity of these developers, confirmed everything we hoped this partnership could deliver.”
On the African side, Maliyo Games highlighted the importance of developing homegrown talent for the digital economy.
“This partnership reflects our commitment to building and nurturing talent within Africa’s growing gaming ecosystem,” said Hugo Obi, founder and CEO of Maliyo Games.
The initiative is expected to scale across multiple African countries, with learners receiving ASU-backed certifications upon completion. Early cohorts have already begun training, with hundreds reportedly completing initial certification modules.
Both partners say the long-term goal is to prepare African youth for global opportunities in AI-driven industries, particularly in gaming, interactive media, and digital innovation, as these sectors continue to expand rapidly across the continent.
