SpaceX has secured the right to acquire AI coding startup Cursor in a deal valued at up to $60 billion, marking one of the most ambitious expansions yet into artificial intelligence by the company led by Elon Musk.
The agreement grants SpaceX the option to complete a full acquisition later in 2026 or proceed with a $10 billion strategic partnership focused on joint AI development. The structure allows both companies to deepen collaboration while retaining flexibility as the AI market evolves.
In a joint statement, the companies said the partnership would enable them to “build the world’s most useful models” by combining Cursor’s developer-focused software with large-scale computing infrastructure. The move is expected to accelerate the development of advanced AI systems capable of handling complex coding and knowledge-based tasks.
Cursor, developed by Anysphere, has emerged as one of the fastest-growing AI coding platforms, widely adopted by software engineers for code generation, editing, and automation. Its growth reflects the broader industry shift toward AI-assisted programming, where systems increasingly handle complex development workflows.
Analysts say the deal signals SpaceX’s evolution beyond aerospace into a broader technology player spanning infrastructure, software, and artificial intelligence. “This is about controlling both compute and application layers of the AI stack,” one industry analyst said, describing the move as a strategic effort to compete with leading AI firms.
The partnership also addresses a major constraint for Cursor’s access to large-scale computing power. By leveraging SpaceX’s infrastructure, the startup is expected to scale its AI model training more quickly and reduce its reliance on third-party providers.
However, the scale of the potential $60 billion acquisition has sparked debate. Some analysts view the valuation as a bold but necessary bet in a rapidly consolidating AI market, while others caution that the long-term dominance of AI coding tools remains uncertain amid intense competition and rapid innovation.
If completed, the deal would position SpaceX at the centre of the fast-growing AI developer tools market, strengthening its role in shaping the next phase of artificial intelligence.
