Google has unveiled a new Android security feature designed to combat the growing threat of AI-powered voice scams, introducing what it describes as a major step forward in protecting users from deepfake impersonation attacks.
The feature, known as Fake Call Detection, is rolling out globally through the Phone by Google app on Android devices running Android 12 and newer.
The update comes as cybercriminals increasingly use artificial intelligence to clone voices and impersonate family members, employers, government officials, and other trusted contacts.
In many cases, scammers combine AI-generated voices with caller ID spoofing to make fraudulent calls appear legitimate.
According to Google, the new technology works by verifying whether a call is genuinely originating from the device belonging to the contact displayed on the screen.
When a trusted contact calls, Android devices using Phone by Google exchange an encrypted verification signal behind the scenes. If that verification cannot be confirmed, users receive a warning that the caller may not be who they claim to be.
Google illustrated the danger with a common scam scenario: a user receives a call appearing to come from “Mum” or another close relative.
The voice sounds authentic thanks to AI voice-cloning technology, but the caller is actually a fraudster attempting to pressure the victim into sending money or sharing sensitive information.
The new system is designed to identify these impersonation attempts before users fall victim to them.
The feature arrives amid a sharp rise in AI-enabled fraud worldwide. Security experts have warned that advances in generative AI have made realistic voice cloning cheaper, faster, and more accessible than ever before, allowing criminals to launch highly convincing social engineering attacks at scale.
Initially, Fake Call Detection is launching on Google Pixel devices before expanding more broadly across compatible Android smartphones.
Google says the protection is enabled by default and operates automatically in the background without requiring users to take any additional action.

The rollout forms part of Google’s wider effort to strengthen Android security against scams and fraud. Recent updates have also introduced enhanced scam detection in messages, protections against malicious screen-sharing attacks, and AI-powered safeguards across Google’s products and services.
As AI-generated impersonation scams become increasingly sophisticated, Google’s latest Android update highlights the growing importance of verifying digital identities.
While no security measure can eliminate fraud, the company believes the new verification system will make it significantly harder for scammers to exploit trusted relationships using AI-generated voices.
