More than 300 staff, students, and alumni of the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) took part in a one‑day training on the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), organised by the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos in collaboration with the institution on Tuesday.
The event, held at Yusuf Grillo Hall, focused on ethical AI practices, cyber safety, data privacy, preventing misuse and plagiarism, and potential career pathways in AI. Organisers described the training as part of efforts to prepare participants for the rapidly evolving digital revolution.
Dr Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, Rector of YABATECH, said the programme was “timely and strategic,” adding that AI is “a defining force in education, governance, business and everyday life.” He thanked the U.S. Consulate for partnering with the college to advance ethical technology education in Nigeria.
“At Yaba College of Technology, we are committed to digital transformation and international partnerships that position our graduates at the forefront of emerging technologies, while upholding integrity, inclusivity and societal good,” Abdul told attendees.
Ms Omoju Miller, Chief Executive Officer of FIMIO and keynote speaker at the event, urged participants not just to use AI tools, but to build and innovate with them. “We are in the most profound global revolution yet — the AI revolution. This is our opportunity to be participants, not just consumers,” she said.
Miller also cautioned against unethical use in academic work and stressed the importance of developing AI solutions grounded in local data, languages, and cultural contexts to avoid bias in technology systems.
The training concluded with the distribution of certificates to participants, highlighting YABATECH’s emphasis on responsible digital innovation and lifelong learning.
