A Nigerian artificial intelligence initiative focused on crisis communication has won the Grand Prix at the 2026 IPRA Golden World Awards, giving international recognition to the country’s work on using AI to tackle misinformation and digital threats.
The winning entry, titled “AI for Crisis Communication: From Study to Strategy,” was developed by Image Merchants Promotion Limited (IMPR) for the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC).
The project began with a 107-page research study examining the challenges and prospects of artificial intelligence in crisis communication in Nigeria. According to the International Public Relations Association (IPRA), the research explored how AI could support real-time monitoring and threat detection within structured governance frameworks.
The findings subsequently contributed to a national symposium organised by the Centre for Crisis Communication. The initiative also led to the development of the Crisis Communication Hub, a collaborative platform involving security agencies, media organisations and technology professionals.
The platform is designed to help identify and respond to digital threats, including fake news, hate speech and disinformation. IPRA said the project has supported more proactive approaches to managing digital threats and public communication.
The award comes as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly important in the fight against the rapid spread of manipulated and misleading information online.
AI technologies can analyse large volumes of information and identify emerging threats. At the same time, generative AI has made it easier to produce convincing false content, including fabricated images, videos, audio and text.
This growing challenge has increased the need for effective crisis communication systems that can identify harmful information and support timely responses.

IPRA recognised the Nigerian project in its Artificial Intelligence for Crisis Management category before it went on to receive the overall Grand Prix. The organisation says the category recognises excellence in deploying AI tools to respond to a crisis in real time.
The IPRA Golden World Awards are an international public relations awards programme established in 1990. The organisation describes the Grand Prix as its overall award for excellence, presented to the entry judged to represent the highest standards among the year’s submissions.
The 2026 awards attracted entries from more than 40 countries, with more than 200 entries selected as finalists during judging.
The Nigerian win also highlights AI’s growing role in public communication beyond content generation. The technology is increasingly being explored for monitoring, analysis, threat detection and crisis response, particularly as organisations face a more complex digital information environment.
For Nigeria, the recognition places an international spotlight on a locally developed approach to applying AI research and communication strategies to one of the major challenges facing governments, businesses, media organisations and the public.
IPRA’s recognition also comes as the organisation continues to emphasise responsible use of artificial intelligence in public relations. Its AI guidelines warn that AI can improve communications while also creating risks involving bias, misuse, deception and harm.
The Grand Prix therefore marks a significant international recognition for the Nigerian project and its focus on applying artificial intelligence to crisis communication, misinformation detection and digital information management.
