The Federal Government has taken a significant step towards modernising Nigeria’s diplomatic machinery with the launch of a comprehensive initiative to embed artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and digital tools into the country’s foreign policy operations.
The announcement was made in Abuja during the second seminar on anticipatory, cyber and digital diplomacy organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The event, held under the theme “From Awareness to Activation: Operationalising AI, Cyber and Digital Statecraft for Nigeria’s Foreign Policy,” brought together government officials, experts and stakeholders to examine how emerging technologies are reshaping global diplomatic practice.
Speakers emphasised that diplomacy is no longer confined to traditional state‑to‑state engagement but increasingly relies on digital platforms, data‑driven analysis and secure communication systems.
Government representatives stated that the adoption of digital diplomacy would enable Nigerian missions abroad to respond more effectively to emerging challenges, improve communication with citizens in the diaspora and strengthen Nigeria’s representation in international forums.
The initiative is expected to support broader foreign policy objectives by equipping diplomats with tools for strategic analysis, early warning and coordinated engagement with global partners.
Participants at the seminar highlighted the growing influence of artificial intelligence in international relations, noting that countries worldwide are deploying AI to analyse geopolitical trends, anticipate risks and enhance decision‑making.
They argued that Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous nation and a leading regional economy, must position itself to benefit from technological innovation in order to protect and advance its national interests.
The government’s move comes amid increasing calls for reform within the foreign service to ensure it remains responsive to contemporary global realities.
