Hundreds of secondary school students across Lagos State have benefited from a targeted digital empowerment programme aimed at building competencies in artificial intelligence, data analytics, and foundational technology skills under the “TechUp Boys” initiative.
The programme, implemented by the LEARNTOR Foundation in partnership with the Lagos State Public Service Staff Development Centre (PSSDC), is designed to bridge the growing digital skills gap among adolescent boys in public schools while preparing them for opportunities in the evolving global technology economy.
Organisers say the training focuses on practical skills, including Microsoft Excel, SQL-based data analytics, introductory artificial intelligence concepts, and leadership development.
The initiative also integrates mentorship sessions to guide students on career pathways in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, emphasised the importance of digital literacy for students during a crucial session of the programme.
“Digital literacy, data analytics and proficiency in Microsoft Excel have moved beyond optional skills to becoming critical tools for economic sustainability and competitiveness,” she said.

She further stressed that initiatives such as TechUp Boys are essential in preparing students to actively participate in the digital economy and not merely consume technology.
Programme facilitators explained that the initiative also addresses wider social challenges affecting young people, including unemployment, lack of mentorship, and exposure to cyber-related risks.
They noted that the inclusion of leadership and behavioural training is intended to promote discipline, innovation, and responsible use of technology among participants.
The LEARNTOR Foundation described TechUp Boys as part of a broader mission to equip teenage boys with future-ready skills that improve employability and social responsibility.
It stated that the programme is being implemented in phases across selected public secondary schools in Lagos, with plans for expansion to reach more students in subsequent cohorts.
Education stakeholders in the state have expressed support for the initiative, noting that it aligns with Lagos State’s broader strategy for digital inclusion, human capital development, and youth empowerment.
As artificial intelligence continues to reshape global industries, organisers say the goal of the TechUp Boys initiative is to ensure Nigerian students are not left behind in the global technology transition, but are instead positioned as active creators and innovators in the digital space.
