Stripe has unveiled a new digital wallet called “Link”, designed to enable autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) agents to make online payments on behalf of users, marking a significant step towards what the company describes as “agentic commerce”.
The announcement was made during Stripe’s annual Sessions conference, where the financial technology firm introduced a series of new products aimed at building infrastructure for AI-driven transactions.
According to the company, Link is a consumer wallet that enables users to connect payment methods, manage subscriptions, and track spending, while also giving AI agents controlled access to make purchases on their behalf.
The system allows users to approve or review transactions initiated by AI agents before payments are processed, ensuring that sensitive financial information is not directly exposed. Instead, Stripe issues secure, one-time-use payment credentials, or tokens, to agents when permission is granted.

In a post on its official blog, Stripe said the system is designed to support the next generation of digital commerce, in which AI agents are increasingly expected to perform tasks such as booking services, purchasing goods, and managing routine transactions for users.
The company explained that agents can be granted programmatic access to the Link wallet through standard authentication systems, after which they can generate payment requests that require user approval before completion. Stripe said this ensures users retain control over spending while still benefiting from automation.
The wallet also integrates with existing payment methods, including debit and credit cards, bank accounts, and buy now, pay later services, and is available on web, iOS, and Android platforms.
Industry observers note that the launch reflects a broader shift in the payments sector, as companies begin to prepare for a future in which AI systems act as independent economic agents. Stripe has already positioned itself as a key player in this emerging space, recently expanding its infrastructure to support what it calls “agentic commerce”.
The firm added that future updates will introduce more advanced controls, including spending limits and conditions under which AI agents may act without direct approval.
The development is part of a wider push by Stripe to modernise global payment systems for the AI era, as competition grows among fintech firms to enable machine-driven financial transactions.
