LAGOS – About 2,500 Nigerians have received training in artificial intelligence safety and digital trust under a nationwide initiative led by the Internet Society Nigeria Chapter.
The programme, organised to mark Safer Internet Day 2026, was delivered across the country’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, reaching a broad cross-section of participants, including students, teachers, parents and persons with disabilities.
According to organisers, the training focused on improving public understanding of emerging technologies and promoting safer online behaviour as the use of AI tools expands rapidly. Sessions covered topics such as digital literacy, data protection, cyber hygiene and responsible use of artificial intelligence.
Officials from the chapter said the initiative forms part of wider efforts to strengthen digital trust and equip citizens with the knowledge required to navigate an increasingly complex online environment. They noted that misinformation, online scams and privacy risks continue to rise alongside advances in technology.
Participants were engaged through workshops, school outreach programmes and community-based events, many of which were conducted in classroom settings and local centres.
The Internet Society, which supports chapters worldwide, has been advocating for an open, secure and trustworthy internet. Its Nigeria chapter said it would continue to expand digital awareness campaigns to reach more communities, particularly underserved groups.
The organisers added that sustained public education would be critical to ensuring that the benefits of artificial intelligence are realised without compromising safety or trust.
