Google has launched a major update to Google Maps, integrating an AI-powered assistant feature called “Ask Maps” and introducing immersive 3D navigation. The company says this is the most significant upgrade to Maps in over a decade.
The Ask Maps feature, powered by Google’s Gemini AI, allows users to interact with Maps using natural language. Users can ask complex questions such as finding quiet coffee shops with phone charging stations, locating scenic routes, or receiving personalised recommendations. The AI provides detailed, context-aware responses, transforming Maps into a conversational assistant rather than just a navigation tool.
In addition, Google has introduced Immersive Navigation, which provides photorealistic 3D visuals of routes and surrounding areas. This feature is designed to make directions more intuitive and easier to follow, highlighting terrain, road features, and key landmarks.
The update is currently rolling out in markets including the United States and India, and is available on both Android and iOS devices, with desktop support expected later. Google says the AI-powered features are part of a broader strategy to embed advanced AI across its core products to enhance user experience.
With Key features such as natural-language conversational queries, personalised recommendations, immersive 3D navigation, and cross-platform availability, Google aims to make Maps not just a navigation tool, but a more interactive, helpful guide for daily travel and exploration.
