Elon Musk has said he plans to rename SpaceX’s artificial intelligence unit from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, replacing “AI” with “SI” for “Super Intelligence”.
Musk confirmed the planned change on Sunday, 4 October, in a post on X. Responding to a user who asked whether SpaceXAI would be renamed SpaceXSI, Musk replied: “Yes, we will make that change.”
The announcement follows a push by US President Donald Trump to promote the term “Super Intelligence” in place of “artificial intelligence”.
Trump said in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly last month that US government documents should use “super intelligence” rather than “artificial intelligence”. The president has subsequently established a government initiative called the Super Intelligence Force, reflecting his administration’s preferred terminology.
A planned rebrand, not a completed change
Despite Musk’s announcement, the rebrand had not yet been implemented at the time of reporting.
Reuters reported that the SpaceXAI account on X had not changed its name, while Musk had provided no timetable or further details about when SpaceXSI would officially take effect. SpaceXAI also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
That distinction is significant: Musk has announced his intention to make the change, but the company should not yet be described as having formally completed the rebranding.
Why “SI”?
The proposed change reflects Musk’s support for Trump’s terminology around advanced artificial intelligence.
On 4 October, Musk posted that there was “No more AI”, followed by “SI” and “It’s better.” He has also described SpaceX as a “super intelligence company”, signalling his preference for the new terminology.
Trump’s campaign to popularise “Super Intelligence” comes as his administration seeks to position the United States as a global leader in advanced AI development. On Sunday, Trump announced that Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton would lead the newly established Super Intelligence Force, which is intended to coordinate the federal government’s engagement with AI companies and other stakeholders.
The proposed SpaceXSI name also reflects the growing importance of AI within Musk’s business empire.

SpaceX has increasingly been linked to Musk’s broader ambitions in artificial intelligence and computing, while the billionaire separately founded xAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot. The latest naming move further connects SpaceX’s technology operations with Musk’s push into advanced AI.
However, the announcement itself does not indicate a change to SpaceX’s core aerospace business. The company’s main name remains SpaceX; the proposed change concerns its AI unit.
For now, therefore, SpaceXAI remains the existing name, with SpaceXSI representing the name Musk says the unit will adopt. No official implementation date has been announced.
The rebrand is nonetheless notable for what it says about Musk’s preferred language for the next stage of AI development — and his willingness to align his companies with the rapidly changing political and technological debate surrounding the technology.
