Thai authorities have arrested six Nigerian nationals over an alleged AI-assisted romance fraud operation uncovered during a police raid in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok.
The operation, reportedly codenamed “Dark Room Crackdown,” was carried out by Thai special operations police after investigations into an online fraud syndicate accused of using fake digital identities and AI-generated images to deceive victims into romantic relationships before extorting money from them.
Police officers raided three condominium units in the Phra Nang Klao Bridge area of Nonthaburi and arrested the suspects, aged between 23 and 35 years. Authorities also confiscated several mobile phones, laptop computers, and bank documents believed to be connected to the operation.
Investigators said preliminary forensic examinations of the devices uncovered romance scam conversations, scripted responses, and AI-generated profile images allegedly used to create convincing fake identities on social media and dating platforms.
“We believe the suspects used online relationships to gain victims’ trust before requesting money transfers,” a police source disclosed.
Thai police further alleged that some of the suspects had overstayed their visas, with overstay periods reportedly ranging from nearly two years to more than four years. The suspects are currently facing immigration-related charges, while additional fraud charges may be filed as investigations continue.

According to investigators, the group allegedly operated in a coordinated manner, with members assigned specific responsibilities including victim engagement, account management, and financial transfers. Authorities believe victims were emotionally manipulated through prolonged online interactions before being persuaded to send money.
“The devices contained evidence linked to romance scam operations,” investigators reportedly said during a post-raid media briefing, adding that authorities were working to identify possible victims both within Thailand and abroad.
The arrests come amid growing global concern over the increasing use of artificial intelligence in cyber-enabled fraud schemes. Security experts have warned that AI-generated images, voice-cloning technology, and deepfake tools are making online scams increasingly sophisticated and harder to detect.
Thai authorities have intensified crackdowns on foreign-led cybercrime operations in recent months. Previous operations in the country led to the arrest of other foreign nationals allegedly connected to international romance and cryptocurrency fraud syndicates operating from rented apartments and luxury condominiums.
Investigators in earlier cases alleged that some criminal groups converted proceeds from online scams into cryptocurrency before transferring the funds overseas through complex financial channels.
International law enforcement agencies have repeatedly identified romance fraud as one of the fastest-growing forms of cybercrime worldwide. Experts say organised criminal groups often exploit emotional vulnerability, fake online identities, and cross-border financial systems to target victims across multiple countries.
Thai authorities said investigations into the latest case are ongoing, with police expected to work alongside immigration officials, financial crime investigators, and international agencies to determine the full extent of the alleged network.
