Google has introduced a major upgrade to Gboard, integrating its Gemini AI models into a new dictation system that automatically refines spoken input into polished text.
Announced during Google’s Android Show: I/O Edition 2026, the feature upgrades traditional voice typing by using AI to interpret meaning, remove filler words, and restructure sentences in real time, producing cleaner output without manual editing.
Google said the update is designed to make voice input feel more like assisted writing than transcription. “We want dictation to feel like you’re expressing ideas, not correcting them afterwards,” a Google product lead said during the presentation.
The Gemini-powered system can remove filler words such as “um” and “uh,” handle mid-sentence rewrites, and adjust phrasing based on context. Instead of delivering raw transcripts, it produces near-final text suitable for messaging and notes.
The feature positions Gboard as a deeper AI writing layer across Android, reflecting Google’s broader push to embed Gemini into core system tools rather than keeping it limited to standalone apps.
Industry analysts say the move increases pressure on third-party dictation and transcription apps that previously competed on cleaner speech-to-text processing and editing features. With similar capabilities now built directly into the default keyboard, these apps may need to shift toward specialised or professional use cases to remain competitive.
The update also highlights a wider industry trend in which AI tools are moving from standalone applications into operating system-level functions, reducing friction for users while consolidating platform control.
Google has not confirmed a global rollout date, but the feature is expected to roll out gradually to supported Android devices with Gemini integration.
