Morocco has signed a $1.28 billion memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a large-scale artificial intelligence infrastructure project to accelerate digital transformation and position the country as a regional AI hub.
The agreement was signed between Moroccan authorities and Nexus Core Systems, a technology company focused on AI infrastructure, high-performance computing, and advanced data systems. The planned project is described as an “AI factory,” combining data centre capacity, research facilities, and an innovation ecosystem to support the development and deployment of artificial intelligence.
Project documents indicate that the facility will be developed in phases and will include high-performance computing infrastructure, a research and development centre, and training hubs designed to support AI talent development and advanced computing research.
“This project will help position Morocco as a leading AI and digital infrastructure hub for the region,” said a key stakeholder at the event.
Officials say the initiative aligns with Morocco’s broader digital transformation agenda, including its national “Digital 2030” strategy, which focuses on expanding sovereign cloud infrastructure, strengthening data systems, and building a competitive digital economy.
The AI factory is expected to support both public- and private-sector innovation while also creating opportunities for training engineers, researchers, and students in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.
Industry observers note that the project reflects a growing trend across Africa, where countries are competing to attract large-scale investments in AI infrastructure, including data centres and cloud computing networks.
