The University of Lagos has appointed Chika Yinka-Banjo as the pioneer director of its newly established AI UniPod, a facility aimed at advancing artificial intelligence research and innovation.
The university said the appointment takes effect from March 2026 and will run for an initial two-year term. The AI UniPod is designed to support research, training and collaboration in emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen digital capacity in Nigeria, where institutions are increasingly investing in technology-driven education and innovation.
Professor Yinka-Banjo, an expert in artificial intelligence and robotics, is expected to lead the development of the centre and oversee its strategic direction. She has previously led AI research activities within the university and is regarded as a key figure in its technology programmes.
The AI UniPod will bring together students, researchers and industry partners to work on AI-related projects, with a focus on developing practical solutions and improving digital skills.
University officials say the hub is intended to prepare students for a labour market increasingly shaped by automation and data-driven technologies. It is also expected to support partnerships with organisations in both the public and private sectors.
The appointment comes amid growing interest in artificial intelligence across Nigeria, as policymakers and institutions seek to expand innovation and compete within Africa’s technology sector.
Analysts say universities are likely to play a central role in this effort, providing both the talent and research needed to support long-term development in artificial intelligence.
