The government of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, has launched an ambitious artificial intelligence (AI)-driven education reform programme to improve foundational learning in public primary schools across the state. The initiative seeks to modernise teaching methods, enhance literacy and numeracy skills, ensuring that every child has access to quality education.
The programme, being implemented in phases, initially targets thousands of pupils in selected schools, with plans for broader expansion over time. It integrates AI-powered platforms into classrooms, enabling teachers to monitor student progress in real time, identify learning gaps early, and tailor instruction to individual needs. The technology is also expected to provide teachers with structured lesson support and analytics to improve classroom effectiveness.
Governor Umo Eno has emphasised the importance of education in his administration’s development agenda, describing it as central to the state’s long-term social and economic growth. Education, he noted, “is not only about access but also about equipping children with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world”
The Commissioner for Education, Ubong Essien Umoh, highlighted that the reform reflects a shift towards modern, innovation-driven learning within public schools. He said the government is committed to ensuring that no child is left behind and that teaching quality continues to improve through the adoption of technology and data-driven methods.
Complementing this effort, the Ministry of Science and Digital Economy, led by Frank Ekpenyong, plays a key role in building digital infrastructure and promoting technology adoption across sectors, including education. The integration of AI into classrooms aligns with the state’s broader ambition to create a knowledge-based economy and prepare students for the future.
Education experts say AI-powered learning systems can transform classrooms by providing instant feedback, adaptive learning pathways, and data analytics that allow teachers to personalise instruction for each pupil. These systems can help bridge learning gaps, improve retention, and enhance overall student performance when properly implemented.
However, analysts caution that the success of AI in education depends on several critical factors, including adequate teacher training, reliable digital infrastructure, and sustained funding. Without these, the expected benefits may not be fully realistic.
The launch of this AI-driven education reform forms part of Akwa Ibom’s broader investment in human capital development. It complements ongoing efforts such as building model schools, recruiting qualified teachers, and enhancing school facilities.
