In an effort to set the pace for the adoption and deployment of artificial intelligence in Africa, Nigeria has completed the draft of its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and is preparing to submit it to the National Assembly for legislative approval. The strategy is designed to guide the country’s development, regulation, and responsible use of AI across government, industry, and research institutions.
Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Minister Bosun Tijani confirmed that the draft was finalised following consultations with government agencies, private-sector stakeholders, and academic experts. The strategy provides a framework for AI governance, innovation, and capacity building, aiming to position Nigeria as a leading hub for artificial intelligence in Africa.
Key objectives of the strategy include promoting AI research and development, strengthening national infrastructure for AI deployment, and ensuring ethical and responsible use of AI technologies. It also focuses on building local technical expertise and supporting AI initiatives that address Nigeria’s economic and social priorities.

The National Assembly is expected to review the draft, which may be debated and refined before final approval. Once enacted, the strategy will serve as the blueprint for Nigeria’s AI framework, guiding policymaking, investment, and implementation of AI initiatives across the country.
Officials say the approval of the strategy will mark a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to regulate and harness artificial intelligence while aligning it with national developmental goals.
