The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have officially launched a $10 billion pan-African initiative to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and stimulate inclusive economic growth across Africa. The announcement was made at the 2026 Nairobi AI Forum, which brought together African governments, private investors, and development partners to chart the future of AI on the continent.
Known as the AI 10 Billion Initiative, the program will provide funding and support for projects that strengthen AI infrastructure, promote entrepreneurship, develop digital skills, and establish regulatory and policy frameworks to ensure responsible and ethical AI adoption.
Nicholas Williams, ICT Operations Division Manager at AfDB, said:
“The AI 10 Billion Initiative paves the way for partnerships and investments that will strengthen Africa’s AI framework, accelerate innovation, and promote inclusive growth across the continent. Africa cannot afford to be left behind in the AI era, and this initiative ensures that we build a future that works for all.”
Jean-Luc Stalon, UNDP Resident Representative in Kenya, emphasised the initiative’s social impact, stating:
“Our goal is to advance AI partnerships that create jobs and improve livelihoods, particularly for youth and women, while ensuring AI is applied ethically and responsibly. By focusing on inclusive development, we can maximise the benefits of AI for all communities.”
Organisers project that the initiative could create up to 40 million new jobs by 2035, while fostering local innovation and capacity building. It also aims to ensure that AI adoption is aligned with Africa’s priorities, emphasising trust, governance, and local value creation.
The launch underscores Africa’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to drive sustainable growth, preparing the continent to compete in a global digital economy while empowering citizens and businesses alike.
