The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to innovation, governance, and the responsible deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) in law enforcement through its Second AI-POL Leadership Dialogue Workshop held on Wednesday at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The workshop brought together senior police officers, technology experts, and international development partners to develop strategies for integrating AI into modern policing operations and strengthening intelligence-led security systems across the country.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Anthony Placid, discussions focused on building institutional capacity for AI adoption while ensuring alignment with global standards in security management and public accountability.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, emphasised the urgency of adopting emerging technologies, noting that artificial intelligence is already reshaping global security architecture.
“AI is no longer a futuristic concept. It is actively transforming security systems around the world, and we must adapt without delay,” he said.
Participants examined a wide range of practical applications of AI in policing, including smart surveillance systems, predictive crime analytics, facial recognition technologies, digital forensics, and data-driven decision-making tools designed to enhance operational efficiency.
Officials said these technologies are expected to strengthen crime prevention capabilities, improve response times, and support more effective intelligence gathering across police formations nationwide.
A major presentation referenced outcomes from the 5th Global Meeting on Artificial Intelligence and Law Enforcement, where Nigeria was identified as a priority partner for the African AI Policing Pilot initiative.
The programme is expected to support capacity building and technology deployment within selected law enforcement agencies across the continent.

The dialogue also placed strong emphasis on ethical considerations, human rights safeguards, and regulatory compliance in the deployment of AI tools within policing systems.
Participants agreed that while AI offers significant opportunities for improving security operations, its implementation must be guided by strict accountability frameworks to ensure transparency and public trust.
The Inspector-General of Police charged officers to translate insights gained into practical reforms within their respective commands, stressing that technological discussions must translate into operational improvements.
The sessions also reviewed ongoing national digital infrastructure projects, including the Federal Government’s Project BRIDGE, designed to connect police formations to a national fibre optic backbone to enable real-time data sharing and support AI-enabled policing systems.
Stakeholders noted that improved digital connectivity would be critical to the successful deployment of advanced technologies across Nigeria’s security architecture.
Security analysts have observed that the Nigeria Police Force’s increasing focus on artificial intelligence reflects a broader shift toward intelligence-led policing and data-driven crime prevention strategies.
They, however, emphasised that sustained investment in infrastructure, training, and policy development will be necessary to ensure the responsible and effective use of AI in law enforcement operations.
The initiative underscores the growing integration of technology into Nigeria’s security framework and highlights continued collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force, international partners, and technology experts to advance modern policing capabilities.
