Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba (OOPA) has secured a ₦2 billion Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Special High Impact Grant to support infrastructure development at its Osisioma main campus, even as the institution strengthens its position as an emerging leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) education in Nigeria.
The funding is part of TETFund’s intervention programme aimed at improving infrastructure across public tertiary institutions. The project is expected to support the construction of lecture theatres, laboratories, hostels, and other key facilities at the Osisioma campus, which is currently under development.
Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, praised the institution for attracting the substantial intervention fund, describing it as a major achievement for the state’s education sector and leadership team.
“I am very glad with the extensive improvement at the Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic Aba. I want to specially congratulate the Rector and his team… the ₦2 billion Grant would facilitate not only the development of the Osisioma Main Campus, where lecture theatres, hostels, laboratories, and other structures/buildings have been ongoing,” Otti said.
Beyond infrastructure development, OOPA has gained national attention for becoming the first polytechnic in Nigeria to establish a dedicated Department of Artificial Intelligence, reflecting a strategic shift toward emerging technologies and digital skills training.
Rector of the institution, Engr. Dr Christopher Kalu Okoro said the institution’s innovation agenda is rooted in aligning education with global technological trends and national development needs.
“This polytechnic is the first to have leather technology as a department in the whole of southern Nigeria. This institution is also the first polytechnic in Nigeria to have Artificial Intelligence as a department… In the whole country, we are the first to have AI as a department,” he said.

Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono has previously highlighted the broader importance of such interventions, noting their role in advancing national development priorities.
“This initiative is of national significance as the intervention goes beyond teaching and learning to addressing major development priorities of Nigeria,” Echono said.
Education stakeholders say the dual focus on infrastructure and emerging technologies positions Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic as a growing hub for innovation-driven learning within Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
The development aligns with Nigeria’s broader push to integrate digital skills, AI, and innovation into higher education as part of efforts to strengthen competitiveness in the global knowledge economy.
As development continues at the Osisioma campus, attention remains on how effectively the institution will combine its expanding physical infrastructure with its ambition to becoming a centre for AI education and research in the country.
