Nigeria is intensifying efforts to build a future-ready digital workforce, with thousands of young people set to receive training in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity through initiatives linked to Coursera and the Federal Government’s broader digital transformation agenda.
The programme aligns with the country’s growing push to equip youths with globally competitive technology skills amid rising demand for digital talent across sectors such as finance, telecommunications, software development, data science, and cybersecurity.
The initiative is connected to ongoing collaborations with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), which has partnered with Coursera to provide large-scale digital learning opportunities to Nigerians through various technology talent development programmes.
According to Coursera, Nigeria’s rapidly expanding internet economy and youthful population have made digital skills development an urgent national priority. The company noted that more than 100 million Nigerians now have internet access, while the ICT sector contributes significantly to the nation’s GDP.
The training initiative is expected to focus heavily on AI, cybersecurity, cloud technologies, data analytics, and other high-demand digital competencies considered essential for the modern workforce.
“This new digital economy presents great opportunities,” said NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, who emphasised the need for Nigeria to build a workforce equipped with globally relevant digital skills.
The agency explained that the collaboration with Coursera forms part of a broader strategy to bridge Nigeria’s digital skills gap and prepare millions of young Nigerians for emerging opportunities in the global technology framework.

Under the programme structure outlined by Coursera, learners are expected to access self-paced online courses, along with mentorship and community-based support systems, to improve completion rates and practical learning outcomes.
Cybersecurity and AI have emerged as two of the most sought-after technology fields globally, with industry experts warning that countries failing to invest aggressively in digital talent risk being left behind in the global economy.
Recent industry reports have highlighted Nigeria’s growing potential to become a major hub for digital expertise, driven by its youthful population and increasing appetite for professional technology certifications. Analysts also project strong future demand for cybersecurity professionals as cyber threats continue to rise worldwide.
Industry stakeholders say the expansion of AI training programmes could help tackle unemployment by opening pathways into remote work, software engineering, digital consulting, and tech entrepreneurship.
Nigeria has witnessed a wave of public- and private-sector investments in AI and cybersecurity education over the past two years. Similar initiatives have been launched by organisations, including Microsoft, technology training institutions, and government-backed innovation agencies.
“AI is no longer a future concept; it is a present opportunity,” said Microsoft executive Olugbolahan Olusanya during a separate AI-skilling initiative targeted at Nigerian youths.
Technology experts believe programmes focused on AI and cybersecurity could significantly improve Nigeria’s competitiveness in Africa’s digital economy while creating employment opportunities for young people across the country.
The Federal Government’s broader digital talent strategy also includes the 3 Million Technical Talent Programme (3MTT), an ambitious initiative to train millions of Nigerians in technical and digital skills by 2027. The programme covers areas including AI, cloud computing, machine learning, software engineering, and cybersecurity.
Analysts say initiatives involving Coursera and similar platforms are particularly important because they provide learners with internationally recognised certifications and access to global-quality educational content regardless of location.
As Nigeria continues to position itself as one of Africa’s leading technology markets, the success of these training programmes may play a critical role in determining how effectively the country competes in the rapidly evolving global digital economy.
